Notara Nutcracker Ballet Trivia and Fun Facts
The Nutcracker Ballet was first performed in St. Petersburg, Russia on December 17, 1892. Music is by Tchaikovsky and the story is based on German author E.T.A. Hoffmann’s story of The Nutcracker and the Mouse King. It was performed for the first time in the United States by the San Francisco Ballet on December 24, 1944. Hundreds of Nutcracker Ballets are performed by ballet companies throughout the world each holiday season. All Nutcracker Ballets, although the basic story stays the same, are different in feeling and choreography.
In December of 1983, the Nutcracker Ballet was performed by The Notara Dance Theatre for the first time. The Notara Dance Theatre's Nutcracker Ballet brings reality and believability to a fairy tale that all can follow, and ends with a spirit we can carry with us forever ...excitement, creativity, beauty, and love.

- More than 200 costumes are used for each show.
- More than 40 volunteers work behind the scenes to coordinate scenery, props, lighting, costumes, and make-up.
- With the help of volunteers, our technical director, Scott Mathiesen of M&M Lighting, brings 120 lights and over 4,000 extra feet of wiring in to the East Stroudsburg High School South Auditorium for the show.
- At each performance, 25 pounds of snow falls and it is swept up, cleaned, and re-used for the next show.
- The Icing dances to Arabian music through fog made with 200 pounds of dry ice.
- The Christmas tree weighs 500 pounds and grows to 25 feet tall.
